Sacred to the memory of Julia Anna wife of S. Tilley died 27th March 1868 aged 45 years. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."

Julia Anna was the youngest daughter of James T. Hanford of Saint John, and the first wife of Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley, a father of Confederation. They were married in 1843 and had a large family. Later, when married to his second wife, Alice Chipman of St. Stephen, Tilley was known as Leonard rather than Samuel.

Hello,

Thanks for posting this information, however there is an error in the transcription. The first Mrs. Tilley died in 1862, not 1868, by which time SL Tilley had already re-married. It’s possible the date is wrong on the tombstone, but doubtful. It is more likely a transcription error.

Very likely an error in transcription, as you suggest – Miss Hill was very advanced in years by the time her work came into my hands, and an ’8′ can look very much like a ’2′ on a well-weathered tombstone and/or in unsteady handwriting… Thank you so much for taking the time to note the correction, and for all the good work your society does to preserve the rich heritage of Queens County, NB.
