Atherton and Russell


Sacred to the memory of Stephen E. Atherton, died Feb. 2nd 1875, age 40 years, 11 months. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord".

Stephen Atherton was the father of Harry Atherton of this city, and brother of Dr. Alfred B. Atherton. Lovell’s Directory 1871 shows S.E. Atherton with a grocery and liquor business at Queen and Brunswick. He was a surveyor of lumber in 1871. John Russell, Stephen Atherton’s father-in-law, died in 1875 and is buried in the lot he owned jointly with Simmons, his business partner.

New Brunswick Reporter and Fredericton Advertiser, Fredericton, NB, 3 February 1892:

The funeral of late Mrs. John Russell took place on Monday. The remains were interred in the old burial ground. Mrs. Stephen Atherton, daughter of the deceased, is at present very ill with la grippe.
