Stephen Atherton was the father of Harry Atherton of this city, and brother of Dr. Alfred B. Atherton. Lovell’s Directory 1871 shows S.E. Atherton with a grocery and liquor business at Queen and Brunswick. He was a surveyor of lumber in 1871. John Russell, Stephen Atherton’s father-in-law, died in 1875 and is buried in the lot he owned jointly with Simmons, his business partner.

The funeral of late Mrs. John Russell took place on Monday. The remains were interred in the old burial ground. Mrs. Stephen Atherton, daughter of the deceased, is at present very ill with la grippe.
